Pete King - Russia Trip, September '07

3rd December 2007

With less than a weeks notice the chance to go skating in Russia landed in my lap thanks to a friend at mine at RedBull. Out of a crew of six of us who were invited, only two of us actually got ourselves sorted to go. Poor form.

The reason for the trip was to skate at a music event on a portable vert ramp, which filled about half hour of our time there. We flew in to Moscow and were met by two of Redbull Russias' staff who had been appointed to look after us for the day.

We cramed in a bit of site seeing and were put on another plane to a city an hour away from Moscow where the event was happening. We walked on to that plan a bit merry in holiday mode with pints in hand. I magine trying that at Heathrow.

The first night there we got taking out to a pretty entertaining night club, and after three hours sleep were picked up at eight in the morning to go street skating. We skated so many perfect spots, in the bitter cold mind, and were driven around all day to all sorts of shockingly good spots. We were asked not to give any lip to any security or police as they don't have the same view on human rights as our fragil little island and you wouldn't get the chance to be lippy twice.

The ramp they had for us to skate was pretty herendous, but that was neither here nor there really, we were in Russia what could we excpect. A local vert ripper came and skated with us, and a really good session was had. Russia hasn't had to many visitng skaters, for various reasons, so the local skaters seemed happy to practice there English on us and ask if we'd ever met Tom Penny. The standard foreign to English skater question.

That night they took us out to a traditional restaurant with the event organisors and the man from the government who allowed the event to happen in his province. Everything in Russia runs on back handers, and you could smell the coruption on this government/mafia figure as he poored us vodka after vodka. That night is all a bit of blur, as everyone round the table made a toast that involved necking a shot, but I do remember having a heated argument with the government man about what a load of soul less shit premiership football is, dodgy dancing, good food and nice people.

All in all I'd suggest a trip to Russia to anyone who gets the chance, and I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more of the former USSR in skate mags and DVD's as it is without a doubt one of the best places I've ever seen for skating.

Thanks to everyone we met there for making it such a memorable time, and thanks to Jon Taylor for getting it.
